Yesterday Facebook rolled out a new feature called Places that lets you and your friends check in to locations, Foursquare-style. If you’d prefer to keep your location private, or at least stop your friends from posting it, here’s how.
If you’re not convinced that posting your location can be a bad thing, check out PleaseRobMe for some evidence. Of course, if you’re careful, check-ins aren’t inherently a bad thing. Whether or not you want to disable them is entirely up to you, but Facebook—yet again—has made the assumption that you want to take part in all of their privacy-eroding new features. If you don’t, or want a little more control over who can divulge your location, you can make this change pretty quickly through your privacy settings.
1) Log in to Facebook. From your Account menu, choose Privacy Settings. You’ll get something like the picture below. Click the Customize option (if it isn’t already selected) and then click the “Customize settings” link (it’s the one next to the pencil below the table depicting your current privacy settings).

2) Under the “Things I Share” heading, all the way at the bottom (of that section), there are two things you may want to change. By default “Places I check in” should be set to only be visible by your friends. If you want to limit it more or less, use the drop down menu to do so. I set mine to “Only Me,” which is as private as you’re going to get. Below that option is “Include me in ‘People Here Now’ after I check in.” It is enabled by default. This will let people know you’re at a particular location via the location’s page or in a search for people near you. Uncheck “Enable” if you don’t want this.

3) Lastly—and this is the important one—if you don’t want your friends to check you into Places, sharing your current location with a bunch of people you may or may not know, go down to the section called “Things Others Share” and find “Friends can check me in to Places.” Initially, mine wasn’t set to anything at all so the default option could be either choice. Regardless, set this to “Disabled” if you don’t want your friends checking you in. Keep in mind that any friend could potentially check you in anywhere. You don’t actually have to be there. If you don’t want anyone playing a practical joke and checking you in to a strip club, for example, this is a good thing to turn off.

UPDATE: As commenter Ryan G. points out, your location can be shared with friends’ applications as well. To turn that off, you have to go to a completely different section. Click the “Applications and Websites” link (pictured to the left) and then go to the “Info accessible through your friends” section. Click “Edit Settings” and you’ll see a bunch of boxes. Anything checked is available to Facebook apps that your friends are using. The last checkbox in this section is “Places I’ve visited,” so uncheck that if you don’t want your friends’ apps grabbing your location information as well.
Since this part is confusing a lot of people, here’s a quick video to demonstrate how to edit your application settings:

And that’s it! While it’s not so great that you’re opted-in to the new Places feature, fortunately it’s pretty easy to opt-out.

Algorithm Changes, Experiments, and Acquisitions
There are currently some interesting happenings with Google search that webmasters may want to pay attention to. The company, which is always busy, has been making moves, which may greatly affect its flagship product – search. This is all in addition to everything the company is doing in social media, mobile, gaming, advertising and everything else (which all may have their own separate impacts on search).
Have you noticed recent changes in your ranking? Tell us about it.
Algorithm Change
Google makes changes to its algorithm all the time, but when a change comes with an announcement, you know people are going to talk. On Friday, Google announced a tweak designed to surface multiple pages from a single site for relevant queries.
“For queries that indicate a strong user interest in a particular domain, like [exhibitions at amnh], we’ll now show more results from the relevant site,” says Google software engineer Samarth Keshava. “Prior to today’s change, only two results from www.amnh.org would have appeared for this query. Now, we determine that the user is likely interested in the Museum of Natural History’s website, so seven results from the amnh.org domain appear. Since the user is looking for exhibitions at the museum, it’s far more likely that they’ll find what they’re looking for, faster. The last few results for this query are from other sites, preserving some diversity in the results.”
Not all webmasters have been thrilled with this. “Brace yourselves! Another Mayday disaster coming,” one person commented -Chris Crum | Webpronews.

Facebook is launching a new live video channel today called Facebook Live. This is the company’s official live channel, broadcasting from Facebook Headquarters in Palo Alto.
“Facebook Live will provide a deeper, more interactive look into what’s happening at Facebook,” a representative for the company tells WebProNews.
Users can submit questions to those featured in videos. For example, America Ferrera and Wilmer Valderrama will appear today, and Facebook users can interact with them through this channel. They can also engage with other viewers, as there is a special feed alongside the video in which viwers can update their status about the event. There is also a chat option.
The video is powered by Livestream. The video player itself comes with options to share on Facebook or Twitter, as well as an embed option.
It appears that while there isn’t a live event going on, the channel just shows past broadcasts, while providing the following message scrolling across the bottom: “Facebook Live is curently off-air, but please feel free to explore our archived videos! Our most recent episode will be available shortly.”
It will be very interesting to see what kind of guests stop by the Facebook HQ to do interview and Q&As. I’m guessing we’ll see some pretty big names.
“After today’s interview, Facebook Live will continue to be your window into what’s new at Facebook,” Facebook’s rep says.
“All of the content featured on Facebook Live will tie back to Facebook products, features or how people are using Facebook,” she adds.

Is your Site Optimized with the Google latest methodology called LSI to Rank High???
Dont be fooled!
Latent semantic indexing, other wise known as LSI, is not what is it is frequently claimed to be. It is not something that a webpage can be optimized for, so that it conforms to LSI standards. There is no such thing as LSI standards. In fact, latent semantic indexing cannot be described to a layman in simple terms.
LSI cannot be used to improve your search engine listings since it is nothing more than a concept. A very mathematically complex concept, sure, but a concept nevertheless, and concepts cannot be used for tangible results. However, there is a guide to what Google are trying to achieve in the use of the words within the term. In the context in which it used, the word semantics here means the meaning of words, and specifically the meaning to which words are put, and what is being conveyed, in the way that the term is used.
The analysis of the text on a webpage, and the application of certain meanings to it, is not new to Google. That is, after all, the basis of Google Adsense, where the text on a webpage is assessed and adverts applied to that page by Google, based on its statistical assessment of the meaning of the page. This assessment is made on the basis of the semantics used by the writer of the page content, and the adverts that appear on Adsense pages do tend to be relevant to the content of the page.
The same procedure has apparently been applied by Google to assessing the relevance of the content of a webpage to the search terms used by Google customers seeking information using the search engine. If the algorithm used by Google determines that the content is relevant, then that page will be listed higher than an equivalent page on another website that is regarded as being less relevant.
This, of course, is true if all other considerations used by Google are equal. Considerations such as the presence of certain meta tags that Google are known to still use, link density and a number of other variables. However, if Google’s so-called latent semantic index algorithm calculates that the page content is not relevant, then that page has no chance of being listed for the search term or keyword used by the seeker of the information.
Then way that this is calculated is based upon contextual relevance. For example, Google will look at the search term used by a customer, and if that is, for example, ‘locks and locksmiths’ the search engine will scan through its database of listings for the keywords ‘locks’ and ‘locksmiths’. Prior to the introduction of the use of what we will loosely term LSI, Google would have listed sites using the word ‘locks’ irrespective of whether these were security locks, locks of hair or canal locks.
Now however, the search engine will use so-called LSI to calculate the statistical occurrences of words semantically related to the word ‘locks’ and the context in which they are being used. If it sees words such as ‘canal’, ‘river. ‘barge’, etc, it will discount these since they do not convey the sense of the word ‘locksmiths’ although they tie in with ‘locks’. The algorithm will, however, connect the words ‘key’ and ‘door’ with both ‘locks’ and ‘locksmiths’ and return a list of webpages that provide information on these.
Unless you are a total fool, therefore, and do not mention any other words connected with security locks on your webpage about locks (and that would be very hard to do), then there is no real need for a page to be ‘optimized’ for latent semantic indexing. It will be done naturally, so those advertising such services have no idea what they are talking about.
There are too many people that have claimed to understand its use by Google and other search engines, without fully understanding what the term itself means. There appears to be no practical use to which the term can be put, since naturally written content about a subject is enough to keep the search engines happy. It would appear to be very difficult to write about doll’s houses without mentioning dolls, so that Google could confuse them with real houses, and anybody who succeeds in doing so should be in more need of other forms of help than an expert in search engine optimization.
Latent semantic indexing, or LSI, is a concept, not a technique. All you need do to satisfy the contextual relevance part of the Google algorithm is to write naturally about your subject and do not try to fool search engines through the endless repetitive use of keywords without any other contextually relevant content. It is not a technique, it is common sense and good and clear writing practice.

Where do I find keyword statistics?
Author Robyn Biar-Storme Internet Promotion Australia 12/5/10
There are several keyword tools available on the internet to assist with your keyword research, these tools make available statistics on search engine queries each month for individual keywords, as well as the level of competition associated with each term. One such tool can be found through Google Adwords. Set up a Google Adwords account and campaign to utilise their keyword tools.
Note: A full list of SEO tools will be comprised and added to upcoming posts.
Once you have carried out your keyword research and comprised your list of keywords, it is then time to narrow that list down remembering that you can only focus on one or two keywords per page.
For example:
Choose a range of high, med and low keyword phrases:
Candles
Oils
Buy candles
Buy pillar candles
Buy Homemade candels online
Note: the last phrase above- typos are common and a viable option when deciding on keywords.
If your list contains one hundred keywords and you only have five web pages to work with, choose ten keywords to focus on ie. two keyword phrases per page. If your content has already been built match the keywords to your current content or be prepared to build additional content to incorporate the keywords throughout.
It is not enough to merely add keywords to your meta tags. Google tries to ensure that the person searching is presented with the best information possible hence a number one listing. If your page contains the keyword candles but does not contain appropriate content Google will recognise this and list your site accordingly. The richer the content and the more times you refer to your keywords throughout, the more likely it is that Google will see your site favourably and list it well.
Once you have your list of focused keywords you can then incorporate them throughout your pages. Name your page title and meta titles appropriately. Short descriptive titles that include keywords are optimal. Add keywords throughout your description and keyword meta tags. Incorporate the keywords throughout your headings, links and alt tags.
Regularly review and revise your keywords. Proceed to carry out the rest of your Internet marketing and promotion plans. If you do not have the time it takes to become an SEO expert and achieve the best possible results, Storme Internet Promotion Australia offers a range of affordable services, allowing you to focus solely on your business by leaving the online marketing to a reputable professional.
