Why Search is Such a Powerful Marketing Channel

Why Search is Such a Powerful Marketing Channel

Search engines take advantage of reverse broadcast networks to help save time and money. They are instant answer systems that provide ultra-targeted advertising.

While normal advertising interrupts people, search allows you to sell what your customers want, when they want it. Search is not intrusive, and does not look or feel like any other form of advertising.
Finding Prospects
Old Targeting Techniques

I had just finished reading Permission Marketing by Seth Godin when I became engaged in one of the most interesting chat sessions of my life. A random kid from California instant messaged me to say hello. In much the same way as other marketers do, he scouted the web to find his ideal client. This guy searched through Yahoo! profiles and found that on my profile I wrote that I collected baseball cards.

He wanted to know if Barry Bonds was my favorite player. He told me he had over 16,000 Barry Bonds cards. I told him that I had an autographed serial numbered Barry Bonds rookie, but baseball cards did not mean much to me anymore. I asked if he did business over the Internet. He, of course, said no. It was clear to me why. He had no way to display any of his cards, and he was using spam to contact people. I asked him if he wanted to have a website on which to sell his cards.

He told me he couldn’t afford it; he said that it was too expensive. But, I thought, what is a fair price for limitless distribution?

Baseball cards, like many collectible commodities, usually drop in value rather sharply once a player retires or that collectible goes out of fashion. Not only does the price drop, but demand plummets. It’s a logarithmic loss of value. I have picked up Robin Yount and Dave Winfield rookies for $5 and $8 each; both cards went for $100 or more in their heyday.
Target Your Market

This kid wanted to buy my autographed Barry Bonds rookie card to add to his 16,000 Bonds cards. Even though he‘ll never sell them, he thought he was doing business. I sold baseball cards back in high school, and I knew how to do it well. But I did not know it well when I started. I was trying to sell expensive cards to people who did not want to spend much money. What did I learn? Sell what your customers want, when they want it.
Public Relations Builds Links

Public relations works, so I still displayed some of my $400 and up baseball cards, just to get the “oohs” and “ahhs.” I learned that once you have a crowd, many people follow just to see what is going on, and then you can make sales. I knew I would not sell these cards. So what did I change?
Organization & Personal Relevancy Build Profit

I created a display case with stacks of all the major stars and local popular players. Each card was $1.00. It did not matter if the card was worth twenty-five cents or four dollars; I just put $1.00 on each of them. I kept up with whom was doing well and would buy up cards of players that were about to become popular. Buy-price ranged from three cents to a quarter a card. Most of the cards I bought were considered ‘junk’ by the sellers, yet I re-sold most within a month or two.

By taking the time to go through their junk and making ordering simple, I made money. That $1 display case was a gold mine. Usually, that case sold more cards than my good cases did. Also, I had very little invested—other than taking the time to organize the cards.
Bad Marketing Wastes Time

So, I decided I would do this kid a favor and send him a free book on marketing from my favorite author. When I asked him if he wanted a free marketing book, he got angry, even though I was trying to help him. Instead of considering my offer, he spouted off Eminem lyrics, telling me that “[he'd] rather put out a mother****ing gospel record.”

All of his frustration, all of his anger, and all of his wasted time were unnecessary. That is why search is powerful. You do not hunt for your customers, they hunt for you. You pick the keywords, and the customer picks you. You not only sell what your customers want, but you also sell it while they are actively looking for it.
How Content Creates Revenue

The $1 baseball card case is a good analogy for effective search engine optimization. Imagine the cards in that case as being web pages. It is great to rank well for a term like SEO, but by ranking well for various small volume searches you may be able to make far more money in the long run. Longer search phrases have more implied intent, thus are far more targeted, and convert at a higher rate.
Featured Content Plays the Role of Public Relations

Including social elements in your site or business is like having the $400 baseball card in the case. The people who reference the interesting parts of your site build your link reputation and authority. Based on that authority, search engines learn to trust other parts of your site and send visitors to those pages, as well.

You can think of web traffic like my baseball cards. Due to the vastness of the market and market inefficiencies, there will always be many ways to make money. If you learn how to spread ideas and build an audience, you can make a windfall of profits.

Online shopping

Online sales are forecast to increase by 15%. If you are not already offering products and services online-with Christmas ideas in mind; you are not in a position to gain your share of the 20% of purchases made online this year.

* “We see the reported UK DIGITAL and on-line sales trend purported to have delivered a 20% market share for pure play on-line and bricks and mortar retailers last Christmas being followed in the Australian and New Zealand retail market place Christmas 2010.” (retailalert.com.au)

According to the retail alert group the percentage of online sales in Australia is a long way behind the UK and US:

Within Australia, online sales currently represent just 5.5% of all retail sales, well below levels in the United States and Britain, leaving room for significant growth over the next few years. Current lower levels are partially due to the fact that Australian retailers have been slow to offer online sales.” (*smartcompany.com.au)

According to IBISWorld some of the bigger retailers are getting it right and it is only a matter of time before other Australian retailers catch up:

* “As access to technology improves, and our overall skill in using it grows, IBISWorld is forecasting time-poor bargain hunters will continue to flock to e-tailers to meet their shopping needs. Improvements in online store usability, efficiency, reliability and security are expected to drive growth of 4.7% in 2010, to reach $20 billion – resulting in a 2.9% growth in employment.

If you are looking to build your online business and profit from the huge increase in online sales this Christmas contact Storme Internet Promotion. We can assist you to correctly market your existing website or to build your business from scratch. Basic website starting at $500.

Google Activity That May Have an Impact on Rankings

Algorithm Changes, Experiments, and Acquisitions

There are currently some interesting happenings with Google search that webmasters may want to pay attention to. The company, which is always busy, has been making moves, which may greatly affect its flagship product – search. This is all in addition to everything the company is doing in social media, mobile, gaming, advertising and everything else (which all may have their own separate impacts on search).

Have you noticed recent changes in your ranking? Tell us about it.

Algorithm Change

Google makes changes to its algorithm all the time, but when a change comes with an announcement, you know people are going to talk. On Friday, Google announced a tweak designed to surface multiple pages from a single site for relevant queries.
“For queries that indicate a strong user interest in a particular domain, like [exhibitions at amnh], we’ll now show more results from the relevant site,” says Google software engineer Samarth Keshava. “Prior to today’s change, only two results from www.amnh.org would have appeared for this query. Now, we determine that the user is likely interested in the Museum of Natural History’s website, so seven results from the amnh.org domain appear. Since the user is looking for exhibitions at the museum, it’s far more likely that they’ll find what they’re looking for, faster. The last few results for this query are from other sites, preserving some diversity in the results.”

Not all webmasters have been thrilled with this. “Brace yourselves! Another Mayday disaster coming,” one person commented -Chris Crum | Webpronews.

Keywords for SEO cont’d
Where do I find keyword statistics?
Author Robyn Biar-Storme Internet Promotion Australia 12/5/10

There are several keyword tools available on the internet to assist with your keyword research, these tools make available statistics on search engine queries each month for individual keywords, as well as the level of competition associated with each term. One such tool can be found through Google Adwords. Set up a Google Adwords account and campaign to utilise their keyword tools.
Note: A full list of SEO tools will be comprised and added to upcoming posts.

Once you have carried out your keyword research and comprised your list of keywords, it is then time to narrow that list down remembering that you can only focus on one or two keywords per page.

For example:

Choose a range of high, med and low keyword phrases:

Candles
Oils
Buy candles
Buy pillar candles
Buy Homemade candels online

Note: the last phrase above- typos are common and a viable option when deciding on keywords.

If your list contains one hundred keywords and you only have five web pages to work with, choose ten keywords to focus on ie. two keyword phrases per page. If your content has already been built match the keywords to your current content or be prepared to build additional content to incorporate the keywords throughout.

It is not enough to merely add keywords to your meta tags. Google tries to ensure that the person searching is presented with the best information possible hence a number one listing. If your page contains the keyword candles but does not contain appropriate content Google will recognise this and list your site accordingly. The richer the content and the more times you refer to your keywords throughout, the more likely it is that Google will see your site favourably and list it well.

Once you have your list of focused keywords you can then incorporate them throughout your pages. Name your page title and meta titles appropriately. Short descriptive titles that include keywords are optimal. Add keywords throughout your description and keyword meta tags. Incorporate the keywords throughout your headings, links and alt tags.

Regularly review and revise your keywords. Proceed to carry out the rest of your Internet marketing and promotion plans. If you do not have the time it takes to become an SEO expert and achieve the best possible results, Storme Internet Promotion Australia offers a range of affordable services, allowing you to focus solely on your business by leaving the online marketing to a reputable professional.

SEO Keyword Research-How to use keywords for SEO

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Keyword Research for SEO
Author Robyn Biar-Storme Internet Promotion Australia 12/5/10

Once you have formed an online business plan and designed your website in a clean and search engine friendly manner, the next step is to brainstorm keyword ideas. Write down as many keyword phrases associated with your services and products that you can think of, including phrases you think people may search on when looking for your product or service.

ie. If you sell candles and aromatherapy products, don’t just think candles, oils, incense etc..

Internet users are now searching on far more specific keyword terms such as tall pillar candles, tea light candles, long burning candles, buy pillar candles, buy candles online, buy wholesale candles and so on.

Whilst statistics may demonstrate that the word candles is being searched on one hundred thousand times per month that particular keyword is quite general and does not give any further information as to what the user is searching for.

The user searching on that keyword term may in fact be looking for information about candles and or candle making rather than looking to buy your product. It will most likely have a high level of competition associated with it also. Whereas the keyword term: buy candles may only receive a few hundred hits per month but is in fact of more value, given that those few hundred searchers are very likely to buy candles and that phrase is less likley to attract high competition.

When deciding which keywords to focus on for the SEO of your website it is important to consider the level of competition for those keywords. Which companies currently compete for those keywords? Can you afford to spend the time and money it will take to list above those companies? If not, it may be far more worth your while looking at keywords that can attract quality hits and are also likely to obtain a higher listing.
