I’ve heard the question many times, why should I pay someone to do search engine optimization for my website? The answer I always give is profit! A good search engine placement company will get you listed high in the search engine ranking long before the average business owner or their employees and during that time you are getting new customers and making more profit.

Notice I say before the average business owner or employee. There are many people out there like me that just have an insatiable interest and love of this type of work and are capable of getting your website ranked. But that certainly isn’t the norm. So, let’s look at where the problem begins. There are so many different website building programs out there now, (some free and some paid) that building your own website is a breeze.

Literally, if you can use MS word or something similar you are capable of building your own website. Let me divert this conversation for just a second, I am currently reading a book called “The Blue Nowhere” the title is apparently what computer hackers call cyberspace (A good book to if you enjoy Sci Fi books about computers) Anyway, I tell you about the book because, the title Blue Nowhere is exactly where unoptimized websites reside, no one seeing them or visiting them until they become just a shell of their original promise and their owners decide to put them out of their misery and pull the plug.

You can hear these former website owners, they are the one’s that say, the internet doesn’t work, I had a website and it didn’t do anything for me! The truth is the internet is an incredible place to marketing your goods and services, but it has to be marketed, and marketing your website is much different than marketing using the traditional Television, Radio and Newspapers, but that is a topic for another article.

My point is unless you have a burning urge to spend a couple of years (at least) learning the workings of the internet and keyword research and all the other things I named above, hiring a professional is truly the way to go, and should pay for itself many times over from the extra revenue due to your new exposure. There are several keyword tools available on the internet to assist with your keyword research, these tools make available statistics on search engine queries each month for individual keywords, as well as the level of competition associated with each term. Today I’m going to try something different. For quite some time now I’ve noticed that the same questions have been asked over and over again in search engine forums. In this article I’ve tried to pick out the most frequent of those questions and then answer them. Hopefully you’ll find some of your questions answered in here, and if you don’t, you can always drop me a line and ask…I might put out a similar Q&A lesson soon in the future, so your questions will definitely get answered here.

So, let’s get started.

1 – What is “relevance” in SEO?
“Relevance” is a central concept in search engine marketing, but you will be hard pressed to find any reasonable definition for it. Most SEO experts take the term for granted, and the rest of us just nod along :-) It is not very complicated, but it does involve some very core ideas, so listen closely.

In SEO, relevance is a criteria used by search engines to determine the importance of a target (page, keyword, website) within a niche. Since search engines are primarily concerned with serving user queries, the role of relevance comes up most often during searches. For example, if I search for the term “search marketing” on Google, the search engine will analyse its index and provide me a list of web pages ranked by how “relevant” they are to “search marketing” – in this case the top result is, now known as Yahoo! Search Marketing.
Note that search engines don’t explicitly deal with niches or categories of websites. Instead, an SE treats the Internet as a loosely defined grouping of topical pages, with those topics forming sub-groups of their own.

Search Engines and Relevance
Search engines assume that websites in general will follow the mantra of “information-targeting”, with the ideal website in a niche being the one that is most relevant to that niche. Sounds simple, right?

Here is where it gets interesting. Search engines measure relevance on different levels, or different categories if you may. Once you understand the above definition, they all make sense by themselves. For starters, there is content relevance – is this page’s content relevant to a search query (and that query’s projected niche)? This is where on-page optimization is so important. Search engines use keywords to measure relevance, but they aren’t checking for keyword density; in fact, they are checking for keyword placement in the page.

A second criteria is link relevance – whether the sites linking to you are “relevant” – i.e. in the same niche (or closely related to the niche), and whether the sites YOU link to are relevant as well. This is, in a nutshell, off-page optimization or link-building.
Relevance in search engine optimization has been the biggest stumbling block for webmasters – the concept is so important that every aspect of SEO is governed by it, but yet so obvious that many of us overlook it.

2 – How useful is Keyword Density?

Keyword density was once the single most important criteria for judging the value of a webpage. I’m talking back in the pre-Google era (now if THAT doesn’t give you a hint about how outdated keyword density is…). However, with Google’s PageRank algorithm and the general trend towards off-page factors determining more and more of your website’s rankings – the importance of keyword density as an on-page optimization tool diminished. People continued to theorize about what the ideal keyword density should be, and estimates ranged from 2% to 8%. Keyword density, in case you are wondering, is measured by the following formula:

d = x / y where:
x = No. of times a keyword is used in a block of content (page)
y = total word count of the page
d = keyword density

The problem with keyword density is quite simple – it is very, very easy to manipulate and spam. Spammers used automated content generators to create highly optimized web pages with high keyword densities. As search engines started to set limits on “acceptable” keyword density, spammers got smarter and smarter and reduced their keyword density as well, making it especially hard for search engines to separate spam content from genuine, useful content.

Search Engines and Keyword Density

Since search engines could not conceivably check every page manually (As a rough estimate, Google indexes 8.1 billion pages – and pages are added daily), and they couldn’t tolerate spam in their search results, search engines devalued keyword density as a ranking tool. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if keyword density did NOT affect your rankings – in fact, keyword positioning (placing the keywords in title tags and header tags) as well as thematic keyword relevance (a fancy term that refers to how related your core keywords are to your website’s main theme or niche) is far more important in terms of on-page optimization. And that, of course, pales in comparison to how important off-page optimization, or link building, is.
So, if possible, ignore the bounds of keyword density and focus on the following:

* Good, useful, quality content
* Keyword positioning
* Keyword relevance

And once you’re done with the basics, move on to the next page (or start building links).
3 – Do web pages need a minimum number of words to be ranked well by search engines?
There’s a myth going around in some search engine forums that you should have a minimum word count for web pages to satisfy search engine requirements.

Let’s put that myth to rest – there’s no minimum requirement for web pages to rank well – in fact, there are many, many web pages that rank at the top position for highly competitive terms WITHOUT having too many words on them – for example, a search for the term “resume samples” on Google gives a top result of a page that has ONLY links on it – no serious content. This is a highly competitive term with over 150,000 searches each month according to Yahoo Search Marketing – a figure that translates to almost a million searches each month on Google.

In other words, word count is not the defining criteria for high rankings – you could have 250 words, or 500, or 1000, or even just a 100 words, but that is still a small part of your on-page optimization, which in itself plays a small part in determining your website’s rankings.
In practice, you will always have different types of pages – some will be main pages for the website or link pages (both usually lacking too much content), while others will be article or informative pages with loads of content. The key is to work on the right page structure for each type of page, and not the word count.

4 – How often should I change the anchor text in my backlinks?
The short answer to that is: pretty often. The long answer?
Well, it starts with a definition.

Whenever we talk about link-building, it seems necessary to mention organic SEO – where other websites link to your website “by themselves” (as opposed to an “artificial” link exchange) because they genuinely find it useful. Why is this important? Because once you understand what search engines are looking for in links, you’ll know how to dominate the rankings.

Relevant to the question, search engines try to measure the “originality” of the link – that is, the chances that this link was natural or “artificial”. Since most of the links (and almost all of the ones that you will get in the beginning) pointing to your website are artificial, you have to make them look organic to avoid any penalties from the search engines.

For example, suppose that you are setting up a website on copywriting – assuming that you have the on-page optimization done and dusted, let’s talk about how you can regularly change your anchor text.

Your Anchor Link Strategy
First, we take your core list of keywords:

* Copywriting techniques
* Learn copywriting
* Copywriting seo
* Copywriting tips
* Copywriting course
* Copywriting services
* …

And so on. Now, take each keyword, work it in an attractive headline and write 1-2 lines describing your website – no hype, no keyword spamming – make it attractive and useful to the reader. Make sure that each description is different – it cannot be totally different, but it should change a bit.

If you do that for each keyword, you have 10 or more sets of link details – the headline makes the anchor text and the 2 lines will act as a description. Once you have this set, start from the first combination and switch to the next one after 25-30 links.

This way you can cycle through your list and maybe get to 300 to 400 backlinks before you get through your set of anchor text and description combinations. If you have fewer core keywords (a tiny niche), you can space out the changes – say every 50 links or so.

What to do when the list is up? Alter the anchor text and descriptions for each keyword and do that for the whole list, then start all over.

If you follow this formula not only will you be able to regularly alter your anchor text (and thus make the link-building process look natural), but by targeting so many keywords within the list you can also end up ranking highly for all of them.

Further Questions
The field of search engine optimization is unnecessarily cluttered with incorrect or outdated advice. Often, people tend to “over-analyse” minor issues, so much so that they miss the big picture.

As always: keep it simple, get the basics right, use the best SEO tools and you’ll get to the top of the search engine rankings in no time at all.

    Now, I’m not saying that product idea is going to doom your business to failure.

    But what I AM saying is this:

    When it comes to Internet marketing, it’s not WHAT you sell that counts — it’s WHO you sell it to!

    If you don’t take the steps necessary to make 100% sure there is an easily reachable market of people online who WANT TO BUY something you can sell them, then there’s a strong chance you’re building your business on QUICKSAND.

    That’s why in all of our programs and courses, the first thing we always, ALWAYS urge you to do is…


    By “niche market,” I simply mean, a group of people who have a certain problem, and are ACTIVELY looking for a solution online without much luck.

    (And of course, they must be willing to pay good money for that solution!)

    If you can provide that group of people with a product or service that solves their problem, then your business has a good chance of making money.

    BUT: No matter HOW fabulous your product is — if no one is looking to buy that product — or something like it — online, then your business will collapse like a house of cards.

    It’s just that simple.

    This isn’t just for beginners, either… Even if you already HAVE an online business, you STILL need to make sure that you’re targeting viable niche market. It’s the only way to make sure your business is built on a solid foundation.

    How do you make sure you’ve identified a market with great profit potential?

    you need to research your market online and find the answers to these four important questions:

    1. Is the market easily defined and reachable?

    You need to know where they hang out, what publications they read, if they have clubs or events that bring them together, and where they look for or share information online.

    Most potential markets will already have places where they congregate. Look for groups, forums, discussion boards, clubs, and special websites — a simple Google search should bring up places to start. Links on any promising sites you find will point to other useful sites.
    2. Is the market small enough that there are not many competitors — but large enough to allow you to make a profit?

    You want a small pond, but it still needs enough “fish” in there to make it worth your efforts.

    If these competitors look well supplied and well funded, it may be more difficult for a small business to compete for eyeballs, traffic, and PPC keywords. Too much heavy-duty competition is a sign that you should look for a smaller, more precise niche.
    3. Will this market actually have and spend money?

    You need to know if these people actually buy stuff!

    It’s actually a good sign if there are sites selling products for the market. If related products are being sold profitably, you know there’s a viable market and you should consider these businesses as potential joint venture partners.
    4. Does the group have a ridiculous amount of passion for the hobby or topic?

    A motivated market eats, sleeps, and breathes their hobby.

    You’re looking for prospects who are so passionate that they must have all the information related to their subject. Think about video gamers or collectors… their obsessive passion is a big reason those markets are so huge!

    Admittedly, this is just the tip of the “niche market research” iceberg.

    There’s a whole lot more you need to know, in terms of doing quality keyword research and how to find your niche market online. But no matter where you’re at with your research, you always need to keep these four questions in mind.

    Today I’d like to answer a question that Izak, one of our readers, recently sent me.

    Izak’s question reflects a common problem people have when they’re first starting out.

    Here’s what he’s currently wrestling with:

    “I have designed a website for the sole purpose of advertising affiliate products. I have 6 affiliate products on different pages on the same website that are in the same category like wellness, health and beauty. However my problem is how to write the sales copy or introduction page with the correct wording to attract visitors/buyers.”

    First off, Izak, I’d just like to point out that “wellness, health, and beauty” are HUUUGE markets! I just plugged each of those terms into Google and here are the results I got:

    Health: 1,760,000,000 results (Yes, that’s almost two BILLION.)

    Wellness: 173,000,000 results

    Beauty: 1,060,000,000 results (Again, we’re over a BILLION.)

    Quite frankly, you will never achieve success if you’re going to set up a general website promoting products that treat a variety of health, wellness, and/or beauty problems. You’re going up against WAY too many competing sites.

    And you’ll never be able to write the kind of highly targeted salescopy you need to attract qualified visitors to your site.

    (Because someone who’s looking for, say, organic wrinkle cream is not in the same market as someone who’s looking for a naturopathic treatment for Crohn’s disease — and there’s no way you can ever build a website that effectively sells to both of those people.)

    So. If you want to have any hope at all in competing in these incredibly large markets, you need to do three things:


    You need to FOCUS on your individual product pages — NOT your main homepage.

    You need to FOCUS on ONE specific problem each of those individual products solves

    You need to FOCUS your pay-per-click and search marketing efforts so that every ad and article you write addresses that ONE specific problem and takes visitors straight to the landing page for the product that solves that specific problem.
    In other words, Izak, you need to divide and conquer!

    The best way to guarantee your online success is to make sure each of your affiliate product pages appeals to a highly targeted group of people.

    Start off by looking at one product at a time. Look at the different health or beauty problems it claims to solve. Now use an online keyword research tool such as or and do some research on each of these problems.

    What problems are people searching for information about? And what are the specific keyword phrases they’re using to describe them?

    Keep your eyes open for keyword phrases that are getting a lot of searches, but don’t have a lot of strong competition for them.

    You should follow up your keyword research by visiting health and beauty-related blogs, forums, and groups to see if people are talking about these problems — and what they’re saying about them.

    What problems are they having a hard time solving? What do they like about the solutions that are currently available — and what do they *wish* they could find?

    Once you have identified a problem that a lot of people are trying to find solutions for, but without any luck — then you’ll know the problem that should be the focus of your salescopy and marketing efforts for that particular product.

    And then — once your targeted marketing efforts are generating a steady stream of qualified traffic to that particular product page — it’s time to move on to your next affiliate product page, and focus IT on one specific problem.

    I know it’s tempting to want to describe your health products as the ultimate cure-all for everything from skin problems to obesity, but people who are searching for skin care products aren’t searching for obesity products — and you simply can’t create an effective page that appeals to both.

    Once again, online success is all about FOCUS. I cannot emphasize this enough! You’ll make FAR more money trying to sell to a small but highly targeted group of people than you can ever possibly hope to make selling to everyone and his dog.

    So, Izak, I know I probably didn’t give you the answer you were expecting — but it’s the answer you needed to hear.
